JLG//JPL (jm)(2007) Three-channel video installation. Recombinant and infinite.
Investigation into notions of language, transl(iter)ation, collaboration, meaning-making, re-enaction, performativity, recombinance & auteurship. Three monitors on pedestals of variable dimensions.
The first monitor consists of randomly-firing video clips extracted from three mid-1960s Jean-Luc Godard films in which Jean-Pierre Leaud is the featured performer. In place of traditional subtitles are transliterative subtitles created through a process of deliberate mistranslation in which the sonic capacities are emphasized over typical notions of "meaning." The second monitor bears these extracted/homophonic texts within a Conversational Karaoke!! template made specifically for this purpose. The colors and fonts were dependent upon the film from which it was taken and each existed in the same recombinant loop as the other two monitors. In the last monitor, the pieces are reenacted with me taking on the Leaud roles. Braille subtitles confirm the seemingly absurd dialog and a host of other small games are played to envelop and engage the participant.
A more comprehensive artist statement as well as both photographic and video documentation/demonstration from the piece are available through email and will find their way to this site by its next revision.
